Overjoyed is how I would describe Tasmania’s Home Hill owners, Rosemary and Terry Bennett when they realised they had won four categories – including the illustrious Wine of Show – for their Kelly’s Reserve Pinot Noir 2015 at the Boutique Wine Show today.
Congratulations Home Hill, on winning:
- Wine of Show
- Pinot Noir
- Red Wine of Show
- Estate Grown & Produced
Anyone with their own small business, in any industry, would get it. All that hard work, sacrifice, planning and anguish that goes with backing your vision and your gut instinct. Most good winemakers don’t need an award to tell them they’ve ‘done good’. There’s a huge amount of personal satisfaction alone in seeing it go from the grape to the bottle.
But, it sure is nice to get the accolade. (In this case; accolades). Especially in an industry with award shows usually geared towards the big side of town. Terry, we know you’ve been fighting the dreaded lurgy that’s been playing havoc everywhere (including our HQ) so we’re thrilled you were feeling better and got to enjoy your big night.
There are a few ways you can sample the winning drop. The best way is a trip to Tassie:
Home Hill Winery is nestled in the picturesque Huon Valley, a short 30-minute drive south of Hobart. Rosemary and Terry Bennett look down on the vineyard from their home, pinch themselves, and wonder how their relaxing hobby farm of six rows of vines has turned into an award winning vineyard that produces some of Australia’s top quality Pinot Noir.
Apples were once produced on the site of the vineyard, along with memories of the years gone by when their three young children were placed in bulk bins to entertain themselves while they harvested their crops of apples.
Now their youngest son, Sean, assists Terry with the careful planning and assiduous cropping levels of the 6 hectare vineyard. Daughter Kelly left her profession as a nurse and teamed up with the family to assist in the marketing of wine and managing of the Restaurant.
The family members now love to share their beautiful property with visitors. They consider Home Hill to be the perfect place to celebrate the good things in life.
Another big congratulations must go to the Shoalhaven’s Coolangatta Estate for their impressive win of White Wine of Show for the Estate Grown Semillon 2009.
All awards were announced today at a crowded industry lunch at the Shangri La Hotel Sydney. Chairman Huon Hooke presented the trophies and announced the winners of the 59 Gold medals, 145 Silver and 352 Bronze medals awarded during three days of judging. We will share the full list of winners in coming days.
The Just Wines Wine of Show trophy was presented by its sponsor Mr Nitesh Bhatia, founder and CEO of Just Wines. The trophy wines will be available for purchase at www.justwines.com.au
It was a milestone event for many people. Most notably, our CEO, Judith Kennedy AM officially launched CELLARDOORS.CO and retired as CEO of the Wine Show. She said, “After twenty-two years managing this wonderful show I have retired as CEO of the event. It’s time to let younger management with fresh ideas take over. I’m thrilled that next year I will be able to enjoy and contribute in the role of Show Patron.”
And so say all of us.
